Blur’s Graham Coxon has hit out at TV talent shows such as The X Factor and The Voice by labelling them as “disgraceful”. Speaking to the Independent, the guitarist said that he disapproved of the idea that aspiring artists could achieve immediate success in the music industry and claimed that he believed in “doing things right”. “To get better at anything you have to practice a lot, It doesn’t just appear. I’ve only got myself to please. When I’m on my own in my front room with a guitar, there’s no one going to say to me, ‘That’s really great’ if I play some old rubbish,” he added. “I do believe in doing things right. Which is why The X Factor and The Voice are so disgraceful to me.” He then went on to say: “That’s how I feel about it. Perhaps I’m old-fashioned in that sense – that I believe you have to pay your dues. Being a musician is not something you can become overnight.” Coxon also paid tribute to his Blur bandmate Damon Albarn’s varied musical projects and said he would like to challenge himself in a similar fashion by working outside of his comfort zone. “Damon’s [...]

Rod Stewart has agreed to appear as a stand-in judge on The X Factor, according to reports. The Daily Mirror says that the singer has signed a deal to temporarily replace Kelly Rowland, who confirmed she would be leaving the show last month due to “scheduling issues” and “global commitments”, while bosses hunt for a permanent replacement. A source claimed that reality TV mogul Simon Cowell has persuaded Stewart to sit on the panel for early auditions, revealing: “Rod is a genuine living legend and exactly what the show needs. The details are still to be ironed out but it looks like he’ll be at the auditions next month in London and possibly Glasgow because of his Scottish heritage. He’s sold more than 100 million records worldwide so he knows exactly what it takes to succeed in the tough world of showbusiness, and hopefully he’ll also be a big draw for viewers who might not have been fans of The X Factor before.” Last year’s series of The X Factor was widely considered a ratings flop after steadily losing viewers in the opening weeks of its run. The show’s winners Little Mix scored a UK Number One with their cover [...]

Fun Lovin’ Criminals frontman Huey Morgan has been forced to apologise after launching an attack on his fellow BBC 6 Music DJ Lauren Laverne. Morgan criticised the former Kenickie frontwoman on his Twitter page earlier this week following the Sony Radio Academy Awards, where Lavern picked up a silver award in the Music Radio Personality category. Morgan called Laverne – along with other BBC DJs Chris Evans and Fearne Cotton – “suckers”. Morgan, who has been covering for Laverne on the station, continued: “You got no idea what I put into my shows. She [Laverne] just shows up and plays on Twitter. Ain’t that BS? I am the people’s champ, don’t need no award. Y’all know how it be.” After Laverne responded by asking Morgan to “stop being weird”, he deleted his tweets and issued an apology, stating: “I was a big fat baby last night & ungentlemanly. Mea culpa.” A spokesman for the BBC confirmed in a statement that Huey had been asked to explain his comments, remarking: “Due to the nature of Huey’s comments, he was spoken to by Radio 2/Radio 6 Music management.” The Sony Radio Academy Awards was hosted by Evans, who scooped Music Radio Personality [...]

The Rolling Stones are looking set to tour later this year after Ronnie Wood revealed he is “keeping October/November free”. The legendary rockers have long been rumoured to be playing live again this year to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Earlier this year, it appeared they would be delaying the celebrations until 2013 after guitarist Keith Richards suggested the band weren’t ready to go back on the road yet. However, speaking earlier this week, Wood hinted Mick Jagger and co could tour before the end of the year, telling The Sun: “It looks like we are going to be doing more stuff. I am keeping October/November free, that’s what I’ve been told. I’m just awaiting more information.” However, the Faces man scotched suggestions the band would be recording new material, adding: “New ones? Are you joking? We are familiarising ourselves with our back catalogue and have only scratched the surface.” Earlier this year, Wood suggested the band were “on the verge” of arranging a reunion and were simply “tying up loose ends”. The band played their first ever gig in London on July 12, 1962. However, Richards has suggested playing in 2013 would be a more fitting half-centenary anniversary. “The Stones [...]

Estranged Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward has confirmed that he will not be taking part in any of the three Black Sabbath shows set for this summer. The sticksman has released a statement on his website, saying that he will not be playing with the band at their Birmingham show on 19th May (this Saturday), nor with them at Download Festival on 10th June or at Lollapalooza in Chicago on 3rd August. Ward had previously revealed he was unhappy with the contract for the band’s new album and tour and claimed he would not take part in the new album sessions and shows if a ‘fair agreement’ was not met. As a result of this, the remaining members of the band vowed to carry on without him. In his new statement, Ward writes that last month he was offered the chance to play just three songs with the band at Download. He wrote: “I was not willing to participate in that offer. I was not prepared to watch another drummer play a Sabbath set, while I was to play only three songs.” Ward then said that he was invited to take part in the band’s show in Birmingham this Saturday [...]

The Hives have announced a UK tour for later this year. The Swedish band will release their new album ‘Lex Hives’ on 5th June and will promote the record with five shows in December. The gigs begin at Bristol’s O2 Academy on 10th December and run until 15th December when the band will headline Manchester Academy. They will also visit Birmingham, Glasgow and London on the tour. ‘Lex Hives’ is the Swedish band’s follow-up to their 2007 record ‘Black And White Hives’. It has been produced by the band themselves and contains a total of 12 regular tracks, including new single ‘Go Right Ahead’, which is the second track on the LP. The band’s frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist has previously told NME that, although some tracks on the album represent a significant departure from their earlier records, the LP “still sounds like The Hives”. “There’s no formula, but it definitely sounds like The Hives. Every good band there is has a certain sound. There are a few songs that couldn’t have been on any of other Hives album, that are sort of a departure, but I’d say that kind of happened on the last time album too.
The Enemy have moved their gigs at Coventry Cathdral Ruins next week to be held on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd May to the city’s Kasbah venue. The trio were due to play the outdoor hometown shows to celebrate the release of their new album ‘Streets In The Sky’. However, they’ve been forced into the rethink due to “noise restrictions imposed by Coventry Council and certain health and safety aspects”. In a statement, the band said they were “devastated, just gutted” at being forced to pull the shows”, but said they’d still play full sets at the Kasbah. “The noise restrictions and some red tape the council and cathedral have imposed mean that we’ll have to move the gig, at the eleventh hour. The band, who are booked to play under headliners The Cure at this summer’s Reading And Leeds Festivals, will play Edinburgh’s Corn Exchange Centre on 21st August. The gig is the second the pop punkers have announced in recent days after they confirmed last week that they would be headlining the Belsonic 2012 event in Custom House Square in Belfast on 19th August. The shows in Edinburgh and Belfast will be the band’s first UK show since the departure of founding members Josh and Zac Farro, and will see the Nashville pop punkers previewing material from their as yet untitled fourth album. Paramore recently revealed that Beck/Nine Inch Nails bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen will be producing their new record, with singer Hayley Williams adding that they have so far recorded and completed one track, which is titled ‘Daydreaming’.
